Using Secret Messages in TV Dramas to Improve Population Welfare

PMC specialises in creating long-running serialised dramas on radio and television.  In the dramas, characters evolve into role models for the audience resulting in positive behaviour change.  Mr Ryerson speaks about the importance and effectiveness of PMC’s work, including the impact in some of the 50 countries where PMC has worked.

The emphasis of the organisation's work is to educate people about the benefits of small families, encourage the use of effective family planning methods, elevate women's status, prevent exploitation of children, promote avoidance of STDs and promote environmentally sustainable behaviours.

William Ryerson hails from the United States and received a BA in Biology from Amherst College and an MPhil in Biology from Yale University, with a specialisation in Ecology and Evolution.  He served as Director of the Population Institute's Youth and Student Division, Development Director of Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania, Director of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and Executive Vice President of Population Communications International before founding Population Media Center in 1998.  He has a 47-year history of working in the field of reproductive health, including three decades of experience adapting the Sabido methodology of social change communications to various cultural settings worldwide.  Mr Ryerson also serves as Chair and CEO of The Population Institute in Washington, DC, which works in partnership with PMC.

Members of the RGS, their guests and others are most welcome to attend this event, which is HK$150 for RGS Members and HK$200 for guests and others.
